SELCO (Self-Consumption) is a programme in Malaysia that allows commercial and industrial users to generate their own solar power for their premises (rooftops or ground-mounted), without exporting excess back to the grid. Under the latest SELCO guidelines (effective 1 January 2025), there are no longer capacity limits for businesses, meaning you can install a system sized to your demand. Standby charges, BESS requirements, and exemption thresholds have also been revised.

Do I need a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) for my solar installation?

It depends on your system size and when you install. For non-domestic (business) solar under SELCO over certain capacities, a BESS may be required, but there are exemptions and phased-in rules. Even if not required, adding BESS gives benefits: peak demand reduction, backup power, improved ROI.
